Materials and Design

Choosing the Right Materials

When it comes to building your own off-grid rocket stove, choosing the right materials is key. Look for materials that can withstand high temperatures and are readily available. Common choices include bricks, clay, metal, and even recycled materials like cans or pipes.

Remember, creativity is the name of the game here, but make sure your chosen materials are safe and durable.

Design Considerations

While there are various designs available, the basic concept of a rocket stove remains the same: a combustion chamber, a vertical chimney, and an air intake. It’s important to consider the size, functionality, and safety aspects of your design.

Keep in mind that a well-designed rocket stove will optimize the combustion process, improve efficiency, and prevent smoke from filling your cooking area.

Step-By-Step Construction Guide

Building your own off-grid rocket stove is a fun and rewarding project. While the specific construction process may vary depending on your chosen design, there are some general steps to keep in mind. These include preparing the base, building the combustion chamber, constructing the chimney, and ensuring proper airflow.

Remember, safety first, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different designs to find what works best for you.

Materials Needed For My Design

  • Approximately 50 red bricks
  • 2 strong and durable food grates (mine were from an old grill)

I built my rocket stove with less than 50 old red bricks. I did not use the concrete mix to put them together since I wanted to be able to tear them down and move my rocket stove if I needed to. With my design, I am able to easily move my rocket stove around on my property as I need, but I have to tear it down brick by brick first!

My rocket stove design is cheap and easy. This is a fantastic build of an off-grid rocket stove for survival that you will absolutely love!

The brick wall in this photo is from my firepit. I built my rocket stove right next to my firepit.

Building the Rocket Stove

To start, you need to set up the foundation of the rocket stove. Place six bricks over the concrete area as shown in this photo. Mine was placed on my backyard patio.

Image illustrates an off-grid rocket stove building tutorial.

Next, lay down four more bricks as shown in this photo, and place a food grate about the size of the foundation. My food grate fits perfectly, except that it hangs over just a tiny bit in the front, which is okay.

Image illustrates an off-grid rocket stove building tutorial.

Then place five more bricks as shown in this photo over the food grate. Leaving a food grate in the fuel chamber helps feed the rocket stove more efficiently as I found the wood burns better with some airflow. I also found that the position of the bottom food grate is best one brick layer high for the best airflow and heat output.

Experimenting with Different Heights for the Food Grate Placement

I have tested different levels of height for the bottom food grate fuel chamber for the best result. Having the food grate just one brick high creates the best fire and heat for this rocket stove. Trust me on this, I do not want you to keep tearing yours down over and over trying to find the best placement for the bottom food grate to get a great roaring fire!

Continue stacking the bricks for the next level as shown in the photo. You will now be starting to build the chimney.

Building the Chimney

You can build your chimney as high as you want or need it. Mine is only six layers high. I wanted to be able to cook with my rocket stove, therefore I wanted my food as close to the fire as possible.

Once you have built up the chimney of the rocket stove, you can place another food grate over the top. This will allow you to place food, pots, and pans right over the chimney to cook food and boil water.
