Being homeless is an incredibly challenging experience, often accompanied by a lack of basic necessities, limited resources, and the constant struggle for survival. Trust me on this one as I was homeless myself with two very young kids and my husband. From living on the streets to staying in temporary shelters, the homeless face numerous challenges that can be difficult to overcome.

Scavenging for Food: Tips and Techniques
When it comes to finding food, creativity is key. Scavenging for edible leftovers, visiting local food banks, or seeking assistance from soup kitchens are some ways to alleviate hunger. Additionally, learning basic foraging techniques for wild edible plants can be a valuable survival skill.
During the long months of my homelessness with my two very young children, I had the availability of WIC and food stamps to feed my family. We would go shopping with those options and load up the stroller we had. That stroller got some miles! I kept non-perishable foods in the bottom basket of that stroller and in all the nooks and crannies I could fit snacks and water. We were also able to get in the lunch and dinner lines at the homeless shelter that fed us food served by volunteers.

Finding clean drinking water is crucial for survival. Public parks, community centers, and homeless outreach programs often provide access to safe water sources. It’s also wise to carry a reusable water bottle and be mindful of public water fountains to stay hydrated.
Keeping a good stock of bottled water for everyone was essential to our survival since we did a lot of walking! We were homeless without a car and had just a stroller to carry our children.

While permanent housing may still be out of reach for many, temporary shelter options can offer some relief. Utilizing homeless shelters, connecting with local organizations, or seeking help from religious institutions are potential avenues. Additionally, learning about public housing programs and advocating for affordable housing initiatives can aid in the search for long-term solutions.
We stayed in a homeless shelter during the night. Everyone had to check in at 8 p.m. every night and leave by 7 a.m. the following morning. Then it was back on the streets for the whole day no matter the weather! We would return to the shelter for lunch and dinner.
I cannot stress enough the emotions I went through when we were placed in overflow at the homeless shelter. This meant that we slept on the dirty cafeteria floors with a ton of strangers off the street with us. However, there were security guards keeping watch over us as we all slept to keep everyone safe! That made me feel much better. The security officers would sit at a desk in the corner of the room and never leave, keeping us safe all night long.
Always Be Ready To Go
Never completely unpack your bags. You need to consistently be ready to go at a moment’s notice and you don’t want to leave your things behind. Trust me on this one! Once I unpacked a ton of things at a small grassy patch by a few businesses to help my kids get some food and drinks. A police officer came by and told me I had only seconds to leave or I would be arrested for trespassing as business owners complained of my presence. I had to leave all of our things behind because the officer did not allow me to pack up. He tossed everything in the nearby dumpster, which was the lunch for my kids that day. There is no rest in public places for you if you are homeless. You need to keep moving on. We hid in the mountains for rest whenever we needed a break from being the city’s dirty rats.
How to Get Out of the Cold without Getting Kicked Around
Sometimes we just needed to get out of the cold! To do this, our family would scrounge up some change and purchase a meal at a fast food restaurant. We would of course enjoy the meal, but also save the packaging and cups for later! Whenever we needed to get out of the cold and had no money, we would sneak into the lobby of a fast food joint with the same packaging of food we kept. Pick a secluded area and put our empty packaging on the table to pretend we were customers.
While this is a sad story, we were not really hungry. You see, we had food stamps, which allowed us to carry food on us as well as plenty of snacks. However, getting out of the cold was necessary at times. By pretending to be customers, we were able to sit in a warm lobby and enjoy the moment of being warm, even if only for a moment! We then would carefully fold our wrappers and pack away our empty cups to use next time. Nobody suspected a thing and if they did, they said nothing to us. Desperate things call for desperate measures and this was a way to keep warm while walking around in the cold. Of course, we also utilized the warmth of the free library!

We utilized the library a lot during our homeless days. We could get out of the weather and sit quietly in peace surrounded by the calmness of books and computers. Our kids could play some fun educational games in the kids’ area and read some fun books while my husband and I would utilize the computers for resources for applying for jobs and assistance programs. We could refresh ourselves with water and some comfortable seating.

Repurposing everyday items like plastic bags, cardboard, or newspaper for insulation, makeshift beds, or even rain protection can make a significant difference. I wore a backpack filled with personal hygiene supplies for everyone to help us keep clean. The homeless shelter was able to provide us with baby wipes since we had young children and we used them to keep ourselves clean. The shelter also provided free nightly showers and you could not be late or you would have no shower!

It’s important to dress for the weather. We were homeless at the end of summer and into the freezing winter months. During the hotter days, we kept cool by the rivers. In the winter, I made sure my kids had heavy and thick snowsuits and winter coats as well as thick socks. Socks are one of the most important items to keep while homeless. Keeping your feet dry is crucial as you walk everywhere. These items we were able to request at the homeless shelter, which they freely give to all in need.

As for us, we found jobs within a few months of being homeless. I applied at a daycare since I had childcare experience and I was able to take my two very young children to work with me. Since I was an employee, my children were receiving free childcare and fun educational activities all the while being with me! I was earning a paycheck as well as my husband who was hired on as a mechanic by a friend. A local Bishop in town helped get us into a new home in a trailer park where he was good friends with the landlord and paid him our first month’s rent and security deposit.
Every day, rain, snow, or shine, I was walking to work pushing my kids in the same stroller to the daycare as I still had not had a chance to purchase a car. Before long, we both had cars and started a great and stable life. As I sit here typing this short story, recollecting the pain of the homelessness we experienced, I am thankful to be a homeowner now with beautiful gardens and fruit trees of abundance. Not a single day goes by where I am not thankful enough for this new safe haven we call home.
