Sourdough Buttermilk Sandwich Bread Recipe

Made with a combination of sourdough starter and rich buttermilk, this bread offers a unique flavor profile that will take your sandwiches to the next level. Once baked, this sandwich bread boasts a delightful tanginess that pairs perfectly with both savory and sweet fillings.

Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 loaf pan

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup sourdough starter
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions
 

For the Dough

  • Combine all ingredients well and knead until a shaggy dough forms.

Bulk Fermentation

  • Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a damp cloth to begin the bulk fermentation process.
  • Perform a series of stretch and folds to the dough during the first 2 hours within 30 minute increments by stretching the dough and folding it over 4 times each time.
  • Allow to bulk ferment up to 8 to 15 hours.

Proofing the Dough

  • Place the dough into the greased loaf pan or baking pan you will be using.
  • Allow it to proof for up to 4 hours until doubled in size.

Baking the Bread

  • Bake at 450 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and cool completely before slicing and enjoying.
