Amish Whoopie Pies

A beloved treat from Lancaster, Ohio Amish Country, these homemade Whoopie Pies are soft, chocolatey, and filled with a creamy, sweet filling—just like the ones found in Amish bakeries!

Equipment

  • 2 Mixing bowls and utensils.
  • 1 Large baking sheet.

Ingredients
  

For the Chocolate Whoopie Cakes

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Classic Whoopie Pie Filling

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 jar marshmallow fluff
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

For the Chocolate Whoopie Cakes

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In the mixer, beat together the sugar, eggs, and vegetable shortening.
  • Combine both bowls together and mix well.
  • Mix in the buttermilk and vanilla extract and mix until well combined. The batter will be thick.

For the Classic Whoopie Pie Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar and continue mixing.
  • Fold in marshmallow fluff and vanilla, beating until smooth and creamy.

Assembling the Whoopie Pies

  • Spread or pipe a generous layer of filling onto the flat side of one cake.
  • Place another cake on top, gently pressing to create a sandwich.
  • Wrap each Whoopie Pie in wax paper to keep them fresh and authentic.

Storage Tips:

  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • For longer storage, freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
